Good points Jason- they really will take whatever you say and either twist it or present it out of context/original emotion or intent to boost ratings. Reminds me of an episode of 30 Rock where they turn it into a reality show and paint Jack Donaghy as someone he's not.

Anyway- I probably wouldn't go on a show like that either, and while I hope they're not portraying prepared Americans as crazy nut jobs, that's definitely what the promos felt like. I'd expect a little less of that kind of slant from Nat Geo, but I guess we'll see.

Those kind of shows and this program in general are shot and edited just right to show the "normal" people how crazy we preppers are. Shows like Hoarders, I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant, Heavy, Biggest Losers, etc., are made not to teach, but to exploit the people on the show and provide entertainment to the regular folk who find it funny, shocking or just good entertainment. It is a circus freak show on display and we are the new freaks for the public to laugh at.

Not to mention these people exposed their preparations, plans, stock and supplies, gun and ammo counts to the population and to the authorities. I hear it from friends of mine a lot, they know where they are going when the SHTF. If I was to turn on that show and find out these people lived near me and I got their name and information and did a little research, I would know exactly where to hit when the SHTF. Poor prepping to expose yourself like that.

My oldest son is an Eagle Scout and is now married, 2 children and getting his Engineering degree from the University of Utah.

My second son was only 2 merit badges and a project away from Eagle Scout. He is married, 2 children and the youngest supervisor of 20 in his machine shop.

Scouting was pivotal in their lives. I have no fears that if a time came that their families needed their scouting knowledge to make it through a difficult situation they could easily handle it with their scouting skills.

I understand that people need to be protected but come on, this is ridiculous! Things have been taken too far.

Scouts in UK No Longer Allowed to Carry Pocket Knives - Bug Out Blog...

If the Scout Motto was “Be Prepared,” it must now be “Pander to People’s Fear of Anything that Could in Any Way Be Dangerous.”...

Alan- I'll definitely check out that book, sounds interesting.

Thanks for your comment, you bring up some important points to think about.

Similar to an emergency on board a plane where I would first secure my own oxygen mask and then help others to secure theirs, I plan to first prepare my family and then myself for disaster/emergency.

After those needs are taken care of, I would hope that I have the resources to help a select few who—through no real fault of their own—are not able to help themselves. In many of those cases, yes, I would expect those receiving help to contribute to the well-being of the group where they are able. I do believe, though, that I have some responsibility to look after those who might find themselves in less fortunate circumstances than I.

Alan- You're absolutely right. Not only do most people not have the skills to survive like we see on Man Vs. Wild or Survivorman, but we also don't have the military background, camera crew lifeline—or the time and money required to gain some of the skills shown on those shows.

On the other hand, there are more practical ways to prepare for emergencies than some of the things you'll see on those shows. It's pretty unlikely that I'll be dropped off in the middle of the Amazon with just a tarp and a knife. But there are skills I can develop that will greatly improve the odds of survival in my own area and situation. Those are the skills, equipment, and other practical preparations that we aim to cover on BugOutBlog.

And you're right—when it comes down to it, the government won't be around to save us. Even if they were, relying on them certainly wouldn't be healthy for the maintaining of our freedoms.

I will have to disagree with feeding old lady down the street when I will have my family and myself to worry about. If a total collapse of our food supply was to actually happen(and IT CAN)I am only going to have food to last me and my family.I am not going to be able to help others out unless they can help out in some way.I know this sounds harsh but when TSHTF that's way its going to be with alot of people.Got a book that some of you might be interested in. Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse by James Wesley Rawles.
It deals with a total economical collapse of our economy and a group of everyday people that got together and survived.
Lets hope we don't come to this, but it's something that can very well take place.
Are you then going to be so ready to feed that old lady down the street?
